The Cosy Crime Caper
‘Percy’s Posse’ is a story based in the tranquil, almost torpid, town of Chitley where Percy Haslem has lived all of his eighty-seven years.
Recently, he’s taken to spending his afternoons in the bookies. Percy’s not a problem gambler, he spends very little, even winning occasionally, he just enjoys the camaraderie and banter of his best mate, retired investigative journalist Didya Toombes, and the company of his fellow punters, a mixed bunch including Chinese restaurant manager Colin, Pete the Pane, Lounge Lizard Larry, Terry Two Toes, and the enigmatic Gloria, possibly connected to MI5.
Annoyed by what he considers antisocial behaviour, Percy exacts revenge on a gang of teenaged skateboarders, unexpectedly resulting in a strong bond forming between the kids and the old man.
Later, when Didya is introduced to Rembrandt, the leader and artistic member of the gang, the lad describes events that cause the journalist to wonder whether bribery and corruption is behind the council decision to close down The Centre, a haven for the needy in the area. So, aided by two of the skateboarders, Didya goes about gathering the proof needed to reveal all.
But before he has enough evidence to involve the Police, matters spiral out of control. Not only professional criminals, but two killers to boot are involved leading to a kidnapping, car chase and a clifftop showdown with one unfortunate participant going over the edge.
The outcome would have been far worse for Percy and his chums had they not fortunately recruited the assistance of a friendly Maori warrior from the bookies.
Definitely not normal times in Chitley.
